Accessibility Apps and Tools for Everyday Life: Be My Eyes, Seeing AI, and More

Technology is not just for work and school. The right apps and settings can help you read your mail, identify products, shop online, manage your money, and stay connected with family and friends — independently.

Visual Assistance Apps

These apps use your phone’s camera and AI to help with tasks that normally require sight:

  • Be My Eyes — Connect with a live volunteer or an AI assistant to get visual help on demand. Point your camera at anything and get a description — mail, product labels, appliance screens, or anything else you need to see.
  • Seeing AI — A Microsoft app that reads text aloud instantly, identifies products by barcode, describes people and scenes, recognizes currency, and reads handwriting.

iPhone and iPad Accessibility

Your iPhone is one of the most accessible devices ever made. Nova’s Training teaches you how to use it fully, including:

  • VoiceOver setup and gestures for full screen reader access
  • Zoom magnification, display accommodations, and Spoken Content for text-to-speech
  • Setting up an iPhone accessibly from scratch
  • Phone calls, texting, FaceTime, and group chats
  • Using Siri, Apple Maps, and rideshare apps

Online Daily Life

Training covers the online tasks that matter most in everyday life:

  • Shopping — Amazon, grocery delivery services, and online stores with a screen reader or magnification
  • Banking and finance — Online banking, bill pay, and stock trading with Robinhood
  • Social media — Facebook, Instagram, and X with a screen reader
  • Entertainment — Streaming services, podcasts, and accessible media
  • Email — Gmail, Outlook, or Apple Mail for personal communication

I Am Newly Blind or Losing My Vision — Where Do I Start?

Start with a free consultation. You do not need to know what assistive technology is, what tools exist, or what to ask for. Your instructor will talk through your situation, figure out what device you have, what you most urgently need to do, and build a plan from there.

Many people start with their phone — learning to use VoiceOver or Zoom on an iPhone is often the fastest path to independence, because your phone is always with you and Apple builds accessibility in from the start.
