The right tool depends on your vision, your platform, and what applications your job requires:

  • JAWS is the most widely used screen reader in professional environments, especially with Microsoft 365 and enterprise software.
  • NVDA is a powerful free screen reader for Windows that works well with web applications and Google Workspace.

If You Have Acquired Vision Loss

You do not need to start over. You already know how to do your job — you just need to learn how to do it with new tools. Training is structured around the specific tasks your position requires, not around generic exercises.

For vocational rehabilitation counselors and employers: training can be documented for accommodation plans, and sessions can be structured around specific job duties and software requirements.

Nem Novakovic is a Certified Assistive Technology Instructor with over 10 years of experience teaching blind, low-vision, and multi-disabled individuals how to use technology with confidence. He is blind himself and teaches from lived experience.
