Assistive Technology Training for People with Multiple Disabilities
Most assistive technology training assumes one disability at a time. But many people are blind or low-vision and have hearing loss, a learning disability, or cognitive challenges. You deserve training that accounts for all of who you are, not just one part.
How Multiple Disabilities Change the Approach
When someone has more than one disability, the assistive technology setup and teaching approach need to reflect all of their needs. Here is how we adapt:
Blind or Low-Vision + Hearing Loss
When hearing is limited, visual and tactile feedback become more important. Training may focus on braille display integration for reading output, maximizing visual cues for users with some remaining sight, coordinating screen reader speech volume and pitch with hearing device settings, and using captioning alongside screen readers in video calls and media.
Blind or Low-Vision + Cognitive or Learning Disability
When processing, memory, or attention are factors, training is structured with extra repetition, simplified step-by-step workflows, consistent routines that build muscle memory, shorter sessions if needed, and clear written or audio reference notes the student can review between sessions.
Low Vision + Hearing Loss
For people with both reduced vision and hearing, training combines magnification with captioning, visual alerts and notifications, and display settings optimized for the specific combination of sensory needs.

Depending on your combination of needs, training may involve any of the following:

Every Learner Is Different
There is no one-size-fits-all approach when someone has multiple disabilities. Every session is built from scratch around you — your vision, your hearing, your learning style, your pace, and the tasks you need to accomplish. Your instructor takes the time to understand the full picture before recommending tools or techniques.
