What Kids and Teens Learn

Sessions are customized to each student’s age, grade level, goals, and vision. Common topics include:

  • Screen reader basics — JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver depending on their device
  • Screen magnification — ZoomText, Fusion, macOS Zoom, or Windows Magnifier for low-vision students
  • Typing and keyboard navigation skills
  • Writing papers and doing homework in Google Docs, Google Slides, or Microsoft Word
  • Navigating school learning platforms — Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom, and Moodle
  • Email, web browsing, and safe internet use
  • File management and cloud storage
  • Using an iPhone accessibly — VoiceOver, Zoom, and accessibility settings

How Sessions Work for Young Learners

Teaching a 10-year-old is different from teaching an adult, and your instructor knows the difference. Sessions with kids and teens are built around patience, repetition without condescension, building confidence alongside skills, and adapting to each student’s learning style and pace.

Nem is a blind adult who grew up learning these same tools. He does not just teach technology — he understands what it is like to be a young person figuring out how to navigate a world built for sighted people. That perspective matters, and students notice.

If you are a parent, you do not need to understand assistive technology yourself. Your child’s instructor handles all of that. You can expect clear communication about what your child is learning, suggestions for practice between sessions, and no pressure to buy software — most tools are already built into your child’s device.

Nem Novakovic is a Certified Assistive Technology Instructor with over 10 years of experience teaching blind, low-vision, and multi-disabled individuals how to use technology with confidence. He is blind himself and teaches from lived experience.
