Learn to Use a Mac with VoiceOver, Zoom, and Built-In Accessibility Tools
Yes, you can use a Mac even if you cannot see the screen — or if you need everything larger. macOS includes powerful built-in accessibility tools, and Nova’s Training teaches you how to use every one of them.
What Your Mac Can Already Do
Every Mac ships with a full suite of accessibility tools at no extra cost. You do not need to buy any additional software to get started.
- ✓ VoiceOver — A full screen reader that speaks everything on screen. Navigate the web, write documents, manage files, and use apps entirely by ear and keyboard.
- ✓ Zoom — Built-in screen magnification that enlarges part or all of the screen. Adjust magnification level, enable smooth scrolling, and use it alongside VoiceOver if needed.
- ✓ Voice Control — Control your Mac entirely by voice. Open apps, click buttons, dictate text, and navigate menus hands-free.
- ✓ Dictation — Speech-to-text built into every text field. Speak instead of typing in any application.
- ✓ Display Accommodations — Reduce brightness, invert colors, enable dark mode, adjust contrast, and reduce motion for light sensitivity and visual comfort.
Who This Training Is For
This training is for anyone who has a Mac and needs to use it accessibly. You may be:
- Totally blind and learning VoiceOver for the first time
- Low-vision and needing magnification, contrast adjustments, or a combination of Zoom and VoiceOver
- Experiencing acquired vision loss from a medical condition, injury, or aging
- Dealing with light sensitivity, migraines, or post-concussion symptoms that make looking at a screen painful
- A parent whose child has a Mac for school and needs accessibility set up
- An employee or student whose workplace or school issued a Mac
You do not need to know which tool is right for you yet. That is what the first session is for.
Common Work and School Tasks We Cover
Training is built around the tools you actually use every day:
- Writing and editing in Google Docs, Google Slides, and Microsoft Word
- Video calls in Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and FaceTime
- Messaging in Slack and email in Gmail, Outlook, or Apple Mail
- Web browsing in Safari and Chrome with VoiceOver or Zoom
- File management, cloud storage, and organizing documents
- Navigating school platforms like Canvas, Blackboard, and Google Classroom
What Your First Session Looks Like
You do not need to install anything or know anything about accessibility before your first session. We start by talking about what you need your Mac to do, assess your current vision and comfort level, and then set up the right combination of tools together. Sessions are one-on-one, remote via Microsoft Teams or phone, and move at your pace. If you have never used Teams before, we can start the session by phone and get you set up.

Nem Novakovic is a Certified Assistive Technology Instructor with over 10 years of experience teaching blind, low-vision, and multi-disabled individuals how to use technology with confidence. He is blind himself and teaches from lived experience.
